Bionic Reading: A Game-Changing Solution for ADHD Reading Challenges
The Familiar Reading Frustration: When Words Slip Away
Every single ADHDer reading this has had that frustrating moment: you finish a page, and suddenly realize you have absolutely no idea what you just read. It's like your brain hit the "eject" button on comprehension the moment you started reading. Sound familiar? Let me introduce you to your new reading superhero: Bionic Reading.
What Is Bionic Reading? Your Neurodivergent Brain's New Best Friend
Imagine a GPS for your eyes that keeps you locked onto the most important parts of text. That's Bionic Reading in a nutshell. This innovative method enhances reading by strategically bolding parts of words, guiding your brain through text more efficiently. It's not magic—it's neuroscience in action.
Are You Experiencing These ADHD Reading Challenges?
Let's get real for a moment. Take a deep breath and ask yourself these questions:
Do you often read a paragraph and realize you've absorbed nothing?
Do your eyes constantly drift away from the text?
Have you ever found yourself reading the same sentence multiple times?
Do long articles feel like an insurmountable mountain before you even start?
Do you feel exhausted after just a few minutes of reading?
These aren't failures. These are your neurodivergent brain's unique ways of processing information. Each "yes" is a sign of your brain's incredible complexity, not a problem to be solved.
Seeing is Believing: A Bionic Reading Demonstration
Let me show you the magic of Bionic Reading with a real-world example.
Traditional Reading Paragraph:
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder can significantly impact reading comprehension and focus. Many individuals with ADHD struggle to maintain concentration during extended reading sessions, often finding their mind wandering or losing track of the text they are attempting to process.

What's Happening Here?
In the Bionic Reading version:
Bold portions guide your eyes through the text
Key word parts are emphasized
Your brain gets natural "anchors" to help maintain focus
The cognitive load of reading feels lighter and more manageable
Think of it like a reading GPS. Those strategic bold sections are like street signs, helping your brain navigate the text without getting lost in the details.
Why ADHD Brains Love Bionic Reading
ADHD brains often struggle with focus, especially during reading. Here's why Bionic Reading is a game-changer:
Focus Anchor: The bolded text provides a natural anchor for your eyes, making it easier to stay engaged.
Reduces Overwhelm: By emphasizing key parts of words, it reduces cognitive load, allowing you to comprehend faster.
Improves Retention: ADHD readers often skim or lose their place, but Bionic Reading helps the brain retain what's being read.
Encourages Dopamine Rewards: Completing a section more quickly and efficiently can feel like a mini-achievement, which is especially rewarding for ADHD brains.
Apps and Extensions to Get Started
Ready to transform your reading experience? Here are some tools:
Bionic Reading Converter: A free tool where you can copy-paste text to convert it into the Bionic Reading format.
Browser Extensions: Chrome extensions like Bionic Reader transform online articles instantly.
Kindle and E-Book Compatibility: Some e-readers now offer Bionic Reading settings for PDFs and eBooks.
Third-Party Apps: Look into apps like Reeder or Instapaper that integrate Bionic Reading for saved articles and longer texts.
A Word of Caution
While many people with ADHD find Bionic Reading helpful, it's not a universal solution. Some may prefer alternatives like text-to-speech. The key is experimenting to find what works for YOUR unique brain. Be patient, it definitely takes time to get used to. The first 1,2,3 maybe even tenth time I used it I was still unsure, but over time I have come to really like it.
Your Reading, Your Rules
Bionic Reading isn't about fixing something that's broken—it's about finding a tool that helps your incredible neurodivergent brain shine. Give it a try, be patient with yourself, and celebrate every small victory. I can’t lie the first time I heard about Bionic reading, I immediately thought “this must be too good to be true” but I was wrong. Or was I actually right? I mean it still seems to good to be true but it clearly isn’t.
Call to Action
Have you tried Bionic Reading? Share your experience in the comments! Even if you don’t have ADHD, still give it a try. The worst thing that happens is that you don’t like it and never use it again. The best thing that can happen? It helps you be more efficient in reading.
Wow, this is so cool Nolan! Never heard of this! Even though I don’t have ADHD, it can be hard for me to focus on reading something especially if it’s not a subject I’m interested in. Thank you so much for the tips! ❤️💪
That's really interesting, it does seem to work better. I also like that people on Substack tend to leave lots of white space and not use long paragraphs.
Reading has been around for centuries, screens and the ease of use of implementing solutions like this are brand new, I'd like to see Google and Apple offer things like this natively in their accessibility settings.
